Mind the Herd

Frost-laden and breath streaming, a small group of American Bison make their purposeful way toward us from the seemingly endless snowfields of deep Winter in Yellowstone National Park. It is thought that 30 to 60 million bison may have roamed the great plains of North America before the mid 1800s. By the late 1800s Yellowstone was the only place in the lower forty-eight states where wild, free bison ranged, and by 1902 only about 24 bison remained in the Yellowstone region. The recovery of the American Bison in Yellowstone National Park is nothing short of inspirational in modern conservation and wildlife management efforts.
