Salmon Spawning
Day three found us at the famed Brooks Falls, a waterfall located within Katmai National Park. The falls are famous for watching bears fish for salmon as they leap over the 6-foot falls on their journey to their spawning grounds in Brooks Lake. Unlike the wilds of Hallo Bay, where one walks the landscape and trails with the bears, Brooks is developed with boardwalks, cabins, picnic grounds, campground, restrooms, and other signs of human habitation. While I was happy to see the bears and sockeye of Brooks, I doubt I will go back. I’ll take the wilds of bumpy tundra, mud flats, river crossings, bear grass, and eye-level shots instead.⠀
