Lewis’s Woodpecker
I spent two mornings the Bear Trap Trailhead Road off the Bridger Creek Road on July 13 and July 15. A pair of lewis’s is using the same cavity as I reported last year. I observed the following:
1. There are three adults actively feeding. Maybe one is an offspring from last year helping out?
2. Same with last year, I have only seen them feed the same color/type of butterfly. (I have not be yet able to positively ID said species of butterfly)
3. Along with moths, berries, ants, etc. I observed them on three different occasions within the hour feeding their young, birds that look embryonic. I searched some field guides and none mention that they predate nests or eat other birds.
