Watching, Waiting, Learning
Now that the chick was a bit older, its calling and begging would alert me to when the parents were near. This was really helpful so I didn't have to be constantly searching and alert to the surroundings. I could jot a few field notes or give the dogs a quick walk without fear of missing a visit by one of the adults. Often, I still didn't see anything, and then a speck would appear in the sky that my binocs would confirm was a parent. How the chick knew they were around when they were out of sight is a mystery to me.
