Little Dipper
A plucky resident of swift, clear mountain streams, the American Dipper is North America's only aquatic songbird. From a rock perch, the dipper dives, swims and even walks underwater feeding on aquatic insect larvae. Evening light often turns the LeHardy Rapids stretch of the Yellowstone River into swirls of blue and gold during September. While probing underwater, this dipper emerged with a leaf, which he examined closely, even turning it 360 degrees before dropping it into the current and watching it float swiftly away.
